My husband and I have been in the Architecture and building industry for 25 years in the United States.  While we are very familiar with the building practices here, the idea of building our dream home in Costa Rica was a bit unsettling.

Mike Brussock of Adobe Construction came highly recommended from several acquaintances and past clients. Once we met Mike, we knew he was “our guy”.  He toured us through a number of his homes and we were extremely impressed by the level of quality, as well as his knowledge of the building challenges in Costa Rica.  We sent our design to Mike and he provided us with a cost estimate which included everything from custom doors and cabinets throughout the home, to landscape & hardscape, pool and security system.  We knew going into the project what the total project cost was and Mike is a man of his word.  He delivered our home on time and on budget.

We can’t say enough about how smooth the process was.  While there were a few issues that came up along the way, they were easily resolved.  Most of our communication was via email but we did make a few trips to the site during construction.  It would not necessarily be required but we took advantage of the opportunity to visit the place we love and enjoy the Pura Vida. 
Mike’s creativity and ability to enhance the design and details throughout the construction process was exceptional.  We worked together, as a team, to utilize creative ideas that gave our home unique and interesting details bringing it distinction and class.

Mike’s wife, Naomi, was extremely helpful and accommodating in working with us on some custom furniture pieces from their wood shop, Maderas Divinas.  She assisted us in finding some additional furniture pieces and window coverings as well.  Mike and Naomi are a great team and have become our friends through this process.

In January of 2010, I purchased a lot in Los Altos Cacique and hired Adobe Construction & Developers (Mike Brussock) to undertake the construction, landscaping of the lot and fully furnish my home, a complete turnkey contract. We agreed on a design, stage payment schedule, completion date, and I received updated photos every 2 weeks to show how construction was progressing.

During the course of construction, I experienced no surprises, and absolutely no stress or worries what’s so ever. On January 2011, I flew down to inspect my new home, and was thoroughly impressed with the construction and quality of build.

We just finished our house in Playa Hermosa last December 2009. Villa Paradiso del Mar. We contracted Adobe for our project last June and we could not be happier with the results. Mike Brussock, Naomi’s husband and owner of Adobe has done everything on time and on budget. I must say that I have never work with anybody that is more professional.

Just for your information, our house is 4300 sq. feet on a very steep hill in a subdivision called Monte Paraiso. Mike is very honest and will spell out in writing exactly what he will do and how much it will cost. He will stick by his estimate and will not nickel and dime you. He is also very flexible through the project. He will accommodate changes where possible and will not charge for minor things. Of course, he will charge fairly for major changes.

He also did a complete turnkey project, ie, permitting, landscape, pool, alarm, summer kitchens, appliances, etc. Since this is going to be a vacation home and we are not moving our stuff down, we hired Naomi to do our window coverings and furniture package.

As far as the money, I am a control freak and I was not happy about paying for something in advance. He will give you a contract, with an approximate payment schedule. It will work great, we wire the money to him on he receives the funds the next day. You will never have to give him more than he needs to complete the next stage of construction.

I did a lot of research, before taking on this project, in fact, we wanted to buy a house that was finished and furnished. It just did not work out. I do not want to sound like a talking advertisement for him, but I do not have one complaint. He has kept his word 100% of the time, and gone above and beyond on some things.

My only word of advice, is get a good lawyer, and do a lot of due diligence on your builder. There are many bad ones down there. As I stated below, your timing is perfect. There are not many projects being built now, and contractors are eager to work.

I strongly recommend Mike Brussock, Adobe Construction and Design, for your project.
After agreeing on the design and costs, construction began on time and we were sent bi-weekly e-mail photographs on progress. Payments were phased and each phase was completed one time. We visited the site once during construction during which time we chose floor tiles, bathroom fittings, kitchen appliances, light fittings and other items needed for the completion. In this we were assisted by Mike's wife Naomi, who also ordered most of the furnishings having first e-mailed us examples and prices.

The house was completed on time, and we were able to accept family for Christmas three weeks after moving in. Many of Mike's ideas were incorporated into the building. We could not have settled in as quickly had it not been for the assistance from both Mike and Naomi.

Our experience with Adobe was excellent, Mike restored my faith in contractors. I have a beautiful house in Altos del Cacique, Playas del Coco Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

When we told our friends we were building a house in Costa Rica while living in New York they all said we were crazy. Mike Brussock proved them wrong. From the moment he agreed to take over our project, we felt like we were in good hands. He allowed us to actually enjoy the process, mailing us pictures as he progressed, modifying the details as we went along and never once compromising on the quality.

We never had to micro manage Mikes' work as he was always right on top of things. After seeing what some of our friends and neighbors went through either building or trying to build using other contractors, I dont think I would have been able to complete our house without him. If we were ever to take on another, whether its a home or condo project, it is without hesitation we would call Mike Brussack to handle the job. He finished within a few months of his sheduled date which is no small miracle in Costa Rica and without any cost overruns. He was right on budget. Today we have a spectacular home in Costa Rica.

Building a home in any environment can be stressful, but Mike Brussock made the process pain free. Mike is very talented and creative, and along with that his construction knowledge is far superior to any of the other builders I interviewed in Costa Rica.

He knows the importance of building a strong house, and will not compromise the integrity of the construction to save money. Mike is also very experienced in building energy efficient homes which was very important to me. Although I made quite a few trips to Costa Rica during different phases of the construction I am confident that I would not have had to do so. Mike and his competent crew were always one step ahead of me. Along with Mike’s vast construction knowledge he has the patience of a saint! Patience in a builder is worth its weight in gold! Mike’s lovely wife Naomi was also a blessing, her decorating skills are exceptional and she knows where to shop which is a big time saver.
